Who We Support

Brock Fahrni Pavilion is 150-bed extended care facility that is home to many Canadian war veterans. The site includes an Artwork Studio, chapel, sundeck, garden space and greenhouse. Residents enjoy regular social activities such as pub nights, and barbecues, and also participate in a thriving gardening and arts programs. Veterans frequently visit local branches of the Legion to maintain old friendships, and Legion representatives also regularly visit with residents. The site receives strong support from the Royal Canadian Legion and other veterans' organizations.

Current Priority – Tapestry Foundation is currently raising funds to transform the garden space at Brock Fahrni Pavilion, including installation of new patio stones, the creation of pathways and private visiting areas, wheelchair height planter boxes, a new greenhouse to support the gardening program, and lush new plants and furniture.

Honoria Conway is a residence for seniors who live independently with assistance. Built on the site of the former St. Vincent’s Hospital, the residence is named after Sister Honoria Conway, Foundress of the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception. Opened in 2008, the site is the first component of Providence Health Care’s Campus of Care to be completed.

The residence includes 60 one-bedroom assisted living apartments for seniors, and eight units for young disabled adults. There are common living rooms, dining rooms and balconies on each floors, as well as meal services and 24-hour emergency response for tenants.

Access into all subsidized Assisted Living units for seniors at Honoria Conway, as well as tenants with disabilities is arranged through Vancouver Coastal Health.

Holy Family Hospital is a recognized leader in the deliver of rehabilitation services, and elder care programs and services for BC seniors. The Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul first established the hospital in 1947 in a five-bedroom home that accommodated 15 to 23 patients at a time. A larger 52-bed hospital was later built, and was further expanded in the 1970s and 1990s. Holy Family Hospital is a recognized leader in the delivery of rehabilitation services, and elder care programs and services for seniors in British Columbia.

As a provincial referral centre for rehab, the hospital has 76 inpatient beds and an outpatient clinic that provides a range of physical rehabilitation services. The patient population includes middle to older age adults who require physical rehabilitation services due to arthritis, hip and knee replacements, and lower limb amputations. The hospital also has 142 residential care beds in its Elder Care Program.

Marion Hospice is a 12-bed facility opened in 2005 that offers end-of-life care. Comprehensive care and support is provided in a home-like setting for individuals with less than three months life expectancy. Support is also provided for family and friends as well.

Marion Hospice is the first hospice established on Vancouver's Westside. It is located on the ninth floor of Windermere Care Centre, and operated and staffed by Providence Health Care. A multidisciplinary care team includes experienced physicians, registered nurses, care aides, counselors, music therapists and an on-site clinical coordinator. The site is named after Sister Marion MacDonald of the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception, who was among the first in Vancouver to initiate hospice care in a hospital setting in the early 1970s.

Mount Saint Joseph Hospital (MSJ) is a 240-bed community hospital on the Eastside of Vancouver that offers both acute and long-term care. It is known for its multicultural approach to service delivery and clinical programs, particularly for Vancouver’s Chinese community.  The hospital was founded in 1946 by the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, the first missionary congregation for women in Canada.

MSJ has an international reputation for excellence in providing for the needs of multi-faith and multi-ethnic communities. Surgical specialties include daycare surgery, geriatric dentistry, otolaryngology, plastic surgery and urology, as well as an ophthalmology program that performs more cataract surgeries and corneal transplants per year than any other hospital in BC. The hospital also operates a Rapid Access Breast Clinic, the first of its kind to be opened in BC. Services to the elderly include a geriatric day hospital, geriatric psychiatry unit and geriatric outpatient clinics.

Through the addition of the ECHO, Providence Health Care is expanding its internationally renowned cardiac services to MSJ.

In 1984 the Sisters of the Charity of the Immaculate Conception, founders of St. Vincent's Hospital, were approached by the BC Ministry of Health to operate a 225 bed extended care facility. This facility was re-opened in 1991 as St. Vincent's Hospital Langara. St. Vincent's Hospital Langara is home to 221 residents from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

The site includes a chapel with stunning stain glass window, a bright and spacious atrium, tranquility garden, specialized suites for palliative care, and small lounge spaces in each unit where residents can enjoy time alone, visit with family or share special times with friends. The site was expanded in 2003 to provide an additional 22 extended care beds.

The Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception came to Vancouver during the Depression and established a shelter for the poor and needy. When their original location on the downtown eastside became too small for their work, they moved to 33rd and Heather Street in 1969 and establish a 152-bed facility known today as Youville Residence. Named after the foundress of the Grey Sisters order, Sister Marguerite Youville, Youville Residence is a multi-level care facility that is home to 84 residents. It includes beautiful gardens and a special unit, Marguerite Place, dedicated to the care needs of residents with dementia.

Centre for Healthy Aging at Providence (CHAP)

In addition to supporting seven Providence Health Care sites, Tapestry Foundation also provides funding for research projects through the Centre for Healthy Aging at Providence.

The Centre is dedicated to research to bring about effective and evidence-based change in health care for BC's seniors and to improve their quality of life. The Foundation provided seed money to help establish the Centre, and continues to fund research that will improve the ways we care for seniors in the future. Note-worthy projects funded through the Foundation include the Geriatric Dentistry Program, the first of its kind in Canada, that resulted in construction of a number of on-site dental clinics through Providence's residential care community; a study on the prevalence of low-vision in seniors living in residential care settings; and a study on the effects of environmental design to manage behaviour problems among residents with severe dementia.
