Gala Raises Over $880,000 for MSJ

VANCOUVER, BC – Heavy snowfall did not deter Year of the Rooster festivities at the 10th anniversary Scotiabank Feast of Fortune gala on February 3, 2017 at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver. Following a traditional cheque presentation to guests at the end of the evening, donations continued to flow in, bringing the grand total raised to just over $880,000 in support of Mount Saint Joseph Hospital’s Surgical Program.

Marking the 10th anniversary of the Scotiabank Feast of Fortune gala on Friday, February 3, 2017, members of Tapestry Foundation for Health Care Fundraising Committee gathered to reveal funds raised for the Surgical Program at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital. A final tally of fundraising activities revealed a grand total of over $880,000 raised in support of the hospital. New equipment is needed to meet growing needs for surgery and special procedures at MSJ. On a typical day, more than 60 people undergo a surgery or special procedure through the Surgical Program. In a year, 16,000 surgeries and procedures are performed that range from operations to remove cancers or restore eyesight, to emergency procedures for potentially serious health problems. The Surgical Program serves the local community as well as the surgical needs of patients from as far away as northern BC.

Proceeds from the 2017 gala will support purchases of high-tech equipment to support specialized surgeries that include breast, ophthalmology, urology, plastic/reconstructive and gastrointestinal, as well as equipment to benefit all patients receiving surgery in MSJ’s operating rooms. Equipment items being funded include:

  • anesthesia gas machines;
  • gastrointestinal scopes to detect problems with top part of the GI tract;
  • an imaging system enabling breast cancer surgeons to perform x-rays in the operating room before completion of surgery, to ensure all cancerous tissue has been removed;
  • patient vital monitor with special features, including the ability to provide printed a heart readout for patients having surgery under local anesthetic, or recovering in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit.

The success of Tapestry Foundation’s 10th anniversary gala brings cumulative fundraising through the Scotiabank Feast of Fortune to more than $4.7 million since 2008. Ten years of generous community support has enabled the purchase of high-tech equipment items for innovative health care services that include diagnostic imaging, surgery, and breast and cardiac care.

“We are proud to mark our 10th celebration in support of Mount Saint Joseph Hospital by once again setting and achieving an ambitious fundraising goal,” said Gala Founder and Honorary chair Mr. Sing Lim Yeo. “We are grateful to longtime sponsor Scotiabank for supporting our vision for the event since 2008, and to all of our loyal donors, sponsors and dedicated volunteers for contributions to support this vital hospital in our community.”

“I wish to also extend special thanks to my Co-Chairs Mrs. Margaret Chiu and Ms. Heather Pei Huang, and all members of our dedicated 2017 fundraising committee for their extraordinary efforts towards our success.”
